Bethnal Green has been previously known as Blithehale, Blythenhale and Bethan Hall Green. It was the home of the silk-weaving trade in the 18th century, which attracted weavers from France and Ireland. A decline in the trade led to increased poverty in the district, and by 1900 Bethnal Green was one of the poorest slums in London. The area was heavily bombed during World War II, and many unexploded bombs have been found in the area since. Prosperity rose in the district throughout the second half of the 1900s, and today it has an increased number of affluent residents.
Bethnal Green has a range of bars, pubs and clubs and is known for its vibrant nightlife. Many of these are independent. It also has a growing number of high street shops, galleries and restaurants.
